Add Avatar to your WordPress comment

My avatar in comments

I was asked how to add an avatar, a small photo of yourself, to your comment on this site. If you glance at comments on this site you will notice some people have a photo of themselves with their comment. I do. Others do not.

The culture of this site is to be yourself here. And to be conscious that, even when we disagree with each other, we are talking to a real person on the other side of the screen. I think we can all be proud of that culture in the community that gathers around this site.

Having a photo of yourself in the comment IMO enhances this. So I encourage you to try this.

Now back to: how?

Well, those of you who do this already – how do you do this?

[This site runs on WordPress with the Headway theme, so whatever works for WordPress sites should work here, and vice versa.]

One person suggested using Gravatar (click for link and follow instructions). Try it. Do you also have other suggestions?

I have also looked at adding a WordPress plugin to do this simply, but have so far not seen one that fulfils requirements. In time I also want to integrate social media (facebook, twitter,…) and commenting on this site better.

ps. wait there’s more: the word “avatar” comes from the Sanskrit avatāraḥ descent, from avatarati he descends, from ava– away + tarati he crosses over. First Known Use: 1784. So it is used for the incarnation of a Hindu deity (as Vishnu. Or an incarnation in human form. Hence, my discussion (connected to the film of that name): Is Christ God’s avatar?. And the earlier fascinating discussion of the relationship of your avatar to you, and, hence, the sacramental possibilities in the virtual world.

If you appreciated this post, there are different ways to keep in touch with the community around this website: like the facebook page, follow twitter, use the RSS feed,…

Thanks for providing the link. I am commenting now purely to see if my avatar (or incarnation?) appears.

  2. I wondered why this wasn’t working- apparently when you set up the picture you choose a rating for the image PG, X etc- well for many websites only ‘G’ setting will work. Once I went back and reloaded the picture and chose G rating this time it worked fine!
