Palm Sunday and Holy Week

Palm Sunday

Let us pray (in silence) [that through this week we may share in Christ’s dying and rising]

pause

Almighty everliving God, [or God of transcendence]
as an example of humility for the human race,
you sent our saviour to become incarnate
and to submit to the cross,
grant us the grace to learn from this patient suffering
and so to share in the resurrection;
through Jesus Christ
who is alive with you,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever.
Amen

This is the shared, ancient collect. Its history with a reflection is found here: Collect for Palm Sunday – Passion Sunday.

Remember, this coming Sunday (25 March 2018) is Passion Sunday with the Liturgy of the Palms, or Palm Sunday of the Passion of the Lord. This is the Sunday we read the Passion.

  1. Hi, Here is a resource worth viewing in how we can grow and express God’s love. Found on you tube; A selfish Argument for Making the World a Better Place. EGOISTIC Altruism. Blessing Ruth

  2. I don’t know how much you folks down under hear about television in the US, aside from getting hand-me-down TV series and movies made for TV. But NBC has been occasionally running live productions of Broadway musicals over the last few years.

Easter Sunday evening they are producing a live version of Jesus Christ Superstar. I’ve been a fan since I was in high school when it first was mounted. Unlike the musicals, this production is being mounted as a rock concert in a huge venue with a live audience, mosh pit and all. Some of the stars participating are John Legend, who plays the title role of Jesus; Sara Bareilles (Mary Magdalene), Brandon Victor Dixon (Judas Iscariot), and Alice Cooper (King Herrod).

    1. Thanks, David. I’m a Superstar fan (most versions I’ve seen). I would love to see this one – it looks like we can’t watch it live from here. I wonder if there will be a recording? Blessings.

  3. Also Bosco please, May I ask, what is the meaning of the word passion in palm Sunday? Passion to me is a commitment of an emotionally response?
    Blessings Ruth

    1. Thanks, Ruth. It comes from the Latin pati, to suffer. The contemporary usage of emotion seems disconnected – the church’s use remains with the original. So the reading of the Gospel is announced as “The Passion of our Lord Jesus Christ according to…” There is, similarly, the feast of The Passion of Saint John the Baptist on 29 August. Blessings.

  4. Thanks Bosco, I have rang round on the telephone and I have my answer. It’s to be COMpassionate in union with others Ruth

  5. As Jesus did, as he rode into Jerusalem, with the knowleadge that he would be killed. Palm Sunday.
Knowing this, he had Compassion for the waiting crowds! Blessings Ruth

  6. Compassion is ‘to suffer with’, when so many leaders of church and community are narcissistic and lack empathy. Explains a lot.

I’m cover pianist Palm Sunday for a colleague who is fighting bone cancer, been thinking what to play, thinking of an organ arrangement for ‘Children of Jerusalem’ hymn, I love the verse:

    ‘Parents, teachers, old and young,
    All unite to swell the song;
    Higher and yet higher rise,
    ’Til hosannas fill the skies.’

https://www.nbc.com/jesus-christ-superstar?nbc=1 is the Superstar show here, but my son installed fierce ad-blocking software so I can’t see it right now!

  7. I can’t remember where I heard this, but I remember a sermon that I heard in the last few years where the preacher spoke of a rival public procession occurring at the same time on the opposite side of Jerusalem to where Jesus entered. It was the entry of the Roman governor Pilate with all the pomp and circumstance of him arriving and entering the city from the coast with his legions.

It made for a vivid contrast, but I figured that he was taking poetic license in the statement.

    1. Coincidentally, David, I speak about this here. I’ll possibly put that video up as my post tomorrow on this site. Blessings.

  8. Cool! I haven’t seen it in years.

We’re all into sports here right now, after the disaster Houston Astros baseball team won the World Series, and now the Houston Rockets basketball team are top of the Western Conference.

A welcome distraction from all the destruction and difficulty, well you’ve been through it, you know what it’s like.

This latest disaster was the third year of serious flooding in Houston, and $109 billion US in damages so the worst. The theaters are still being repaired.

    Be well dear Bosco.
