Saint Luke

imgB.asp

October 18 is the feast of Saint Luke

Almighty God,
you called Luke the physician,
whose praise is in the gospel,
to be an evangelist and physician of the soul:
by the grace of the Spirit
and through the wholesome medicine of the gospel,
give your Church the same love and power to heal;
through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord,
who is alive and reigns with you,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever.
Amen.

From Common Worship (CofE)

Almighty God,
who inspired your servant Luke the physician
to set forth in the Gospel the love and healing power of your Son:
Graciously continue in your Church this love and power to heal,
to the praise and glory of your Name;
through Jesus Christ our Lord,
who lives and reigns with you,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever. Amen.

From BCP (TEC USA)

Almighty God,
you inspired Luke the physician to proclaim
the love and healing power of your Son;
give your Church grace through his teaching
to strengthen the afflicted,
heal the desolate
and bind up the broken hearted;
through Jesus Christ our Lord
who is alive with you
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever.
Amen.

  1. To which one might add:

    Troparion – Tone 5

    Let us praise with sacred songs the holy Apostle Luke,
    the recorder of the joyous Gospel of Christ
    and the scribe of the Acts of the Apostles,
    for his writings are a testimony of the Church of Christ:
    He is the physician of human weaknesses and infirmities.
    He heals the wounds of our souls,
    and constantly intercedes for our salvation!

    Kontakion – Tone 2

    Let us praise the godly Luke:
    he is the true preacher of piety,
    the orator of ineffable mysteries
    and the star of the Church;
    for the Word, Who alone knows the hearts of men,
    chose him, together with wise Paul, to be a teacher of the gentiles!

  2. Thanks so much, Bosco. I lead a Congregational church in a Chicago suburb, Morton Grove. St. Luke’s Church! I will use one of these in my pastoral prayer on Sunday. (I’m leaning towards the prayer from the NZPB. Excellent book, by the way!

    I have such fun making up the order of service each week. The church is fairly liturgical, but I have some freedom to mine the rich liturgical resources at my fingertips!
