Song for Shavuot

This video is a rockin trip through the Ten Commandments. The video honours the feast of Shavuot (Pentecost), the holiday when the Jewish people commemorate receiving the Torah (Law) at Mount Sinai.

People very quickly talk about the “Ten Commandments” as if we all agree on what that refers to. There are two versions in the Bible: Exodus 20:1–17 and Deuteronomy 5:4–21.

Greek Orthodox, Anglicans, and Protestants except Lutherans divide the Exodus text, calling verse 3 number 1, verses 4–6 number 2, and so on. The Jewish Talmud makes verses 1–2 as the first “saying” or “declaration” (rather than “commandment”), and combines verses 3–6 as number 2. Augustine started with number 2 of the Talmudic division, and made an extra commandment by dividing the prohibition on coveting into two. Both Roman Catholics and Martin Luther adopted this. Roman Catholics use Deuteronomy by default when quoting the Ten Commandments whereas Luther used the Exodus version.

I

I am the Lord your G-d who has taken you out of the land of Egypt.

I, the Lord, am your God. You shall not have other gods besides me.

You shall have no other gods but me.

II You shall have no other gods but me. You shall not take the name of the Lord, your God, in vain. You shall not make unto you any graven images.
III You shall not take the name of the Lord your G-d in vain. Remember to keep holy the Lord’s Day. You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain.

IV

You shall remember the Sabbath and keep it Holy. Honour your father and your mother. You shall remember the Sabbath and keep it Holy.
V Honor your mother and father. You shall not kill. Honour your mother and father.
VI You shall not murder. You shall not commit adultery. You shall not murder.
VII You shall not commit adultery. You shall not steal. You shall not commit adultery.
VIII You shall not
steal.
You shall not bear false witness. You shall not steal.
IX You shall not bear false witness. You shall not covet your neighbor’s wife. You shall not bear false witness.
X You shall not covet anything that belongs to your neighbour. You shall not covet your neighbor’s goods. You shall not covet anything that belongs to your neighbour.

This year Shavuot and Western Christian Pentecost coincide.
