NZ Anglicanism has gone from praying the Psalms as being the lifeblood of our spirituality to the Psalter being the most neglected book in the Bible! NZ Anglicanism has become a coalition of chaos!
Gracious God,
you have prepared for those who love you
good things which no eye can see,
and which surpass our understanding;
pour into our hearts such longing for you,
that we,
loving you in all things and above all things,
may obtain your promises,
which exceed all that we can desire;
through Jesus Christ
who is alive with you,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever.
Amen.

A braided river does not have a clearly-defined channel. There are approximate banks to the river, and between these sides, the streams are always moving across the wide river’s bed. If the edges, the banks, become too ill defined, the danger is, of course, that the river simply becomes a swamp. This is a very good image for worship in New Zealand’s Anglicanism.

An Anglican Identity Course of eight videos was launched in Queensland, Australia, in February. I encourage you to use it, and even adapt it to your own particular context.
God of the desert,
Jesus was led by the Spirit
to fast forty days in the wilderness
and was tempted as we are, yet without sin;
give us grace to observe the disciplines of Lent;
and, as you know our weakness,
so may we know your power to save;
through Jesus Christ our Redeemer,
who is alive with you and the Holy Spirit,
one God now and for ever.
Amen

The language used to promote ordination and Religious Life (meaning, community, following Jesus, joy, prayer, service…) needs to become the language AND THE REALITY of encouraging people to come to church – to join the common prayer of the gathered Christian community.
