No Alleluia in Lent
Why do we not use “Alleluia” in Lent, but are happy (and encouraged) to use “Praise the Lord” (or similar) which is simply the English of “Alleluia”. The answer may surprise you!

God,
the source of all our strength;
watch over us within and without,
that in body we may be protected from all adversity,
and in mind cleansed from all destructive thoughts;
through our Saviour Jesus Christ,
who is alive with you and the Holy Spirit,
one God now and for ever.
Amen.

I’ve been finding out a lot about “deconstruction”. I have entered a world of exevangelicals, even #exvangelical. These are generally people who are questioning the American-style conservative evangelical Christianity that they grew up in. And online they are doing it with all the well-honed skills, fervour, and energy of their evangelical past.

Transfiguring God,
before the passion of your beloved Son
you revealed his glory on the holy mountain:
grant that we who by faith behold the light of his face
may be strengthened to bear the cross,
and be changed into his likeness from glory to glory;
through the same Jesus Christ
who is alive and reigns with you,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever.
Amen.

God of the desert,
Jesus was led by the Spirit
to fast forty days in the wilderness
and was tempted as we are, yet without sin;
give us grace to observe the disciplines of Lent;
and, as you know our weakness,
so may we know your power to save;
through Jesus Christ our Redeemer,
who is alive with you and the Holy Spirit,
one God now and for ever.
Amen

I hadn’t realised: there are churches that do not make ash to be used for Ash Wednesday from the previous year’s Palm/Passion Sunday crosses – they purchase the ash from a shop.
Almighty God,
grant that we, meditating always on what is right and true,
may please you in word and deed;
through Jesus Christ, our Saviour
who is alive with you,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever.
Amen
