Triduum and Easter 2023

Wordle of Sacred Triduum rites

Let us pray (in silence) [that the Risen Christ draw us into the life of God]

pause

O God,
you make this most holy night to shine with the glory of the risen Christ,
stir up in your Church a spirit of adoption,
so that, renewed in mind and body,
we may dedicate our lives wholeheartedly to your service;
through Jesus Christ
who is alive with you,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever.
Amen.

Commentary on the above Collect

The above collect (prayer) is my reworking for my Book of Prayers in Common in which I seek to provide a set of collects with history and commentary.

The collect is from the Eucharist of the Easter Vigil in the Gelasian Sacramentary (454), the Gregorian Sacramentary (377), the Bobbio Missal (258), and the Sarum Missal:

Deus, qui hanc sacratissimam noctem
gloria dominicae resurrectionis illustras,
excita in Ecclesia tua adoptionis spiritum,
ut, corpore et mente renovati,
puram tibi exhibeamus servitutem.

The current RC translation is:

O God,
who make this most sacred night radiant with the glory of the Lord’s Resurrection,
stir up in your Church a spirit of adoption,
so that, renewed in body and mind,
we may render you undivided service.

The failed 1998 translation had it as:

O God,
you brighten this most holy night
with the radiance of the risen Christ.
Quicken within your Church the spirit of adoption,
so that, renewed in mind and body,
we may dedicate our lives wholeheartedly to your service.
We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God for ever and ever.

TEC BCP (1979) renders it:

O God,
who made this most holy night to shine with the glory of the Lord’s resurrection:
Stir up in your Church that Spirit of adoption which is given to us in Baptism,
that we,
being renewed both in body and mind,
may worship you in sincerity and truth;
through Jesus Christ our Lord,
who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever. Amen.
