Superb! Advent for Dummies! But is Gaudete Sunday/Advent 4 really pink? I think the liturgical colour is called ‘rose’, isn’t it?
Enlighten us please, Bosco. We know how liturgical colours are a favourite topic.
I have reservations about rejecting the repentance theme in Advent. The lections seem pretty judgement-focussed to me and surely that should stir us to repentance? St John Baptist looms large and he didn’t go in for anything cozy!
Since we’re moving beyond the 2 minute version about Advent, Steve, let’s be clear – it’s the third Sunday (not your reference to the 4th Sunday) that is pink, and yes – technically, it might preferably be called “rose”, but a quick check online shows about a quarter of the time it’s called “pink”. One explanation was a shift in mood to a lessening emphasis on repentance, and an echo of the rose Sunday in Lent. As far as I can see, with more than a page devoted to explaining liturgical colours in the NZ Lectionary, there is no reference or allowance for pink/rose! (Though there is a reference to the possibility of Advent being blue). Blessings.
Thank you, Bosco, for putting me right on Gaudete Sunday. In the old Roman Missal, it’s the introit for Advent 3 which gives the Sunday its name and the Philippians reading re-appears as the epistle for Advent 4.
As for colours, I suppose ‘pink’ and ‘purple’ would make sense in many parts, especially the Diocese of New Hampshire. ‘V/B’ are the recommended colours for the entire Advent season in the APBA Lectionary, but no indication is given in the 68 page booklet of what the ‘V/B’ stand for, so possibly vermillion and black?
