This is not quite a book review, because this book is a collection for daily reflection from the Sunday before Advent through until Christmas (with a few appendices for during the Christmas Season). I will await the actual season to use them as intended. In the last few days, I have read several to get a taste.
So, this isn’t a book to sit down and read through at one sitting. Instead, here are reflections for each day leading up to Christmas (some fresh, some previously published elsewhere), each shorter than five-hundred words.
I have known the author, Craufurd, for decades. He was my training vicar during my curacy. He is a natural storyteller, connecting his anecdote seamlessly to a deep spirituality. He reads widely. On looking through the book, I spot Wittgenstein, Thomas Merton, Evelyn Underhill, Kingsley,… There are references to art, to hymns, and to the traditional themes of Advent (Heaven, Hell, Death, Judgment; Love, Hope, Joy, Peace;…)
The book is appealingly produced. It has a number of photos, has beautiful content, and points to the exquisite Mystery of the Incarnation.
I enthusiastically recommend this book for your Advent.
