As part of my ongoing rebuilding older sections of this site, I have reposted some earlier pages in the spirit of Throwback Thursday. This is one of those.
These are the versions of the Benedictus and Magnificat used by the Cistercians in New Zealand and Australia – and other people as well. Including me.
Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel,
who has visited the people and redeemed them,
and has raised up for us a mighty saviour
in the house of David, his servant.
As was promised by the lips of holy ones,
those who were the prophets from of old:
a saviour who would free us from our foes,
from the hands of all who hate us…

My soul glorifies the Lord,
my spirit rejoices in God, my Saviour.
God looks on the lowliness of his servant
henceforth all ages will call me blessed.
The Almighty works marvels for me.
Holy is God’s name!
There is mercy from age to age,
on those who fear God,…
