The Torah reading in the synagogue this Sabbath is Deuteronomy 11:26-16:17
Rosh Chodesh is two days – today and tomorrow, beginning the month of Elul (אֱלוּל). If you count from Tishri, then that is the last month of the year. Rosh Chodesh Elul is the beginning of a forty day “Season of Teshuvah” that culminates on Yom Kippur (this year, September 25-26). Hence, this is a time of reflection, of repentance.
Beginning on Rosh Chodesh Elul and continuing until the day before Rosh Hashanah (this year, September 16-18), it is customary to blow the shofar (ram’s horn) every day (except for Shabbat).
