no room for “spiritual not religious”

“I think it’s great the way churches have become more inclusive and open-minded these days…”

“… aren’t you all entitled to your half-arsed musings on the divine. You’ve thought about eternity for twenty five minutes and think you’ve come to some interesting conclusions. Well let me tell you, I stand with two thousand years of darkness and bafflement and hunger behind me. My kind have harvested the souls of a million peasants and I couldn’t give a ha’penny jizz for your internet assembled philosophy!”

  1. I think it’s crucially important for us Christians to keep abreast of how comedians perceive the Church. They’re more perceptive than we are, most of the time (George Carlin and Bill Hicks were particularly incisive in their, rather more profane, criticisms).

This vicar is an unsympathetic character, but I can’t help but feel that he makes a valid point about the poverty of modern “spirituality without religion” and “internet-assembled philosophies”. The souls of his million peasants, won to faith in the midst of “darkness, bafflement and hunger”, ought to make us question our all too easy confidence in our own salvation…

(This is one of a series of Mitchell & Webb sketches on “The nasty people who are still unaccountably [shop assistants, vicars, etc.]”.)
