Thomas Merton springs to mind when God is treated as “a being” existing alongside and like any other being. He was reading Etienne Gilson’s The Spirit of Medieval Philosophy, bought because he was studying medieval French literature. Tom found an eye-opener in Gilson’s explanation that God is being, not merely a being. And this was a central moment in his conversion journey.
