Pendulum Waves

Thanks to people who pointed out the above video. Fifteen uncoupled simple pendulums of monotonically increasing lengths dance together to produce visual travelling waves, standing waves, beating, and (seemingly – I’ll come back to this) random motion.

I love some of the comments:
“Does it do the same pattern every time or is it random?”
(It’s the same every time.)

“Totally fake, you can see the fishing line and at 2:01 in the upper left corner you see a guy with a blow dryer aiming it at the thing.”

“That’s cool….chaos follows order follows chaos follows……”
“A life lesson… :-)”

To the last comment I would add: actually it only looks random, but there is a deeper pattern going on underneath. Another (bigger?) life lesson?

  1. I’m not sure if it was intended, or if it was even connected to your blog at all, but while looking at it, I heard something that sounded like a badly-tuned radio station, with crackling, cars hooting, and someone tuning a guitar. I hate blogs with soundtracks, and as soon as I hear one, close the window (bandwidth is too expensive even for good sound tracks).

    1. Thanks, Steve. I’m getting a LOT of spam recently 🙁 and nearly didn’t pay attention to your comment. But you are correct – one of the embedded videos was set to “autoplay”. I didn’t know the code about that – but looked it up, and fixed it. Blessings.
